About this tool

The Age Calculator works out your age from your date of birth to today, or to any other date you choose.

The result appears in years, months and days, together with your total days, weeks and hours and a countdown to your next birthday. Every calculation runs in your browser, so your date of birth is never sent anywhere.

People use this online age calculator for 4 main jobs: checking their current age, finding their age on a specific date such as a school or job application deadline, working out the age gap between two people, and counting how many days are left until a birthday. The tool has 3 parts: the date of birth field, the reference date field and the results panel.

This page explains how to use the calculator, what the result shows, how to calculate age on a phone calculator and with an Excel formula, the 2026 age chart by birth year, special cases such as a 29 February birthday, and the situations where an exact age matters.

Calculating a Baby's or Child's Age

For babies and toddlers, the calculator also shows total weeks and the remaining days. A baby born on August 20, 2025 is 8 weeks 4 days old, or 1 month 29 days, on October 19, 2025. Four weeks are not always one calendar month, because months are 28 to 31 days long.

How to Calculate Age on a Phone Calculator

To calculate age on a phone calculator, subtract the date of birth from today's date in stages: days first, then months, then years.

The built-in Calculator apps on iPhone, iPad and Android have no date functions, so each part is worked out separately.

Example: date of birth August 25, 2001, today's date June 10, 2026.

  1. 1

    Work out the days.

    10 − 25 = −15. The result is negative, so borrow 1 month. The month before June is May, which has 31 days: 10 + 31 − 25 = 16 days.

  2. 2

    Work out the months.

Take June (6), subtract 1 for the borrowed month, then subtract the birth month August (8): 6 − 1 − 8 = −3. The result is negative, so borrow 12 months from the years: −3 + 12 = 9 months.

  3. 3

    Work out the years.

    2026 − 1 − 2001 = 24 years. One year comes off because 12 months were borrowed.

The final result is 24 years, 9 months and 16 days. For age from the birth year only, type 2026 − 2007 = 19, then subtract 1 if the birthday has not happened yet.

10 + 31 − 25 = 16

6 − 1 − 8 + 12 = 9

2026 − 1 − 2001 = 24

24 · 9 · 16

years · months · days

Order of subtraction: days → months → years.

iPhone and iPad

Keep the Age Calculator on your Home Screen: open this page in Safari, tap the Share button, then choose Add to Home Screen.

Android

Open this page in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then choose Add to Home screen. The calculator icon appears like an app.

This calculator runs in the browser and does not install widgets. A countdown on the iPhone Lock Screen, an Apple Watch Smart Stack or the Mac Notification Center needs a countdown widget app from the App Store or Google Play.

Excel Formula to Calculate Age

The Excel formula to calculate age is =DATEDIF(A2,TODAY(),"Y"), where A2 holds the date of birth.

It returns your age in complete years as of today. Replace TODAY() with another cell, such as B2, to get the age on a specific date.

English versions of Excel use the function names shown here with a comma (,) as the separator. Use a semicolon (;) instead if your regional settings use a decimal comma.

Google Sheets uses the English function names (DATEDIF, TODAY), with the separator set by the spreadsheet's locale.

Microsoft notes that the "MD" argument of DATEDIF can return wrong results, so this table calculates the remaining days with EDATE. For birth dates on the 29th to 31st or on 29 February, Excel can differ from the calculator above by a day or a month, so compare the two before using the figure in a document.

Special Cases When Calculating Age

3 special cases often change the result of an age calculation: a 29 February birthday, the Gregorian and Hijri calendars, and Korean age counting.

How Do You Calculate Age If You Were Born on 29 February?

People born on 29 February turn a year older on 28 February in common years and on 29 February in leap years. The Age Calculator applies this rule to your age and to the birthday countdown.

  1. 0Feb 29, 2024Born
  2. 1Feb 28, 2025Common year
  3. 2Feb 28, 2026Common year
  4. 3Feb 28, 2027Common year
  5. 4Feb 29, 2028Leap year

The chance of being born on 29 February is about 1 in 1,461. Which date counts in non-leap years depends on the country and the purpose, so for official matters follow the rule of the authority involved.

Gregorian Age vs Hijri Age

Your Hijri age is about 3% higher than your Gregorian age. A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, while a Gregorian year has 365 or 366 days. The gap is 10 to 11 days a year, so 33 Gregorian years are roughly 34 Hijri years.

17 years (Gregorian)≈ 17 years (Hijri)
25 years (Gregorian)≈ 25 years (Hijri)
33 years (Gregorian)≈ 34 years (Hijri)
40 years (Gregorian)≈ 41 years (Hijri)
50 years (Gregorian)≈ 51 years (Hijri)
60 years (Gregorian)≈ 61 years (Hijri)

The Age Calculator uses the Gregorian calendar. The Hijri figures above are estimates.

International Age vs Korean Age

International age starts at birth and goes up on each birthday, while traditional Korean age starts at 1 at birth and goes up every 1 January. South Korea officially switched to international age for administration on 28 June 2023.

18International
19Year age
20Traditional Korean

Example: born December 20, 2007, counted on July 1, 2026. Year age (current year minus birth year) is still used in Korea for a few rules, such as military service.

How to Calculate the Age Difference Between Two People

To find an age difference, enter the older person's date of birth as the birth date and the younger person's date of birth as the reference date.

The years, months and days shown are the age gap between them.

  1. 1

Enter the older person's birthday in Date of birth.

  2. 2

Enter the younger person's birthday in Age on this date.

  3. 3

Press Calculate Age. The years, months and days in the result are the age difference.

Age difference example
Older sibling born
April 18, 1996
Younger sibling born
September 3, 2001
5Years
4Months
16Days

The older sibling was born on April 18, 1996 and the younger on September 3, 2001. Their age difference is 5 years 4 months 16 days, or 1,964 days.

If the order is reversed, the calculator shows a message that the birth date must come before the reference date. The difference in days stays the same whenever you calculate it.

When Do You Need to Calculate Your Age?

There are 10 common situations where you need your exact age, from applying for a driving licence to planning retirement.

  • 18

    Voting and legal adulthood

Most countries set both the age of majority and the voting age at 18.

  • 16–18

    Getting a driving licence

The minimum driving age ranges from 16 in most US states to 17 in the United Kingdom and 18 in most of Europe.

  • 4–7

    Starting school

Children start primary school between the ages of 4 and 7, depending on each country's cut-off date.

  • 18–21

    Buying alcohol

The legal drinking age is 18 in most countries and 21 in the United States.

  • 18–35

    Applying for visas and jobs

Working holiday visas, scholarships and some jobs have age limits, such as 18 to 30 or 18 to 35 at the time of application.

  • 66–67

    Planning retirement

The UK State Pension age is 66, and the US full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

  • 0–5

    Tracking a baby's or child's age

Vaccination schedules, growth charts and BMI-for-age use a child's age in months and days, not just years.

  • Policy

    Applying for life insurance

Insurers set your entry age from your last birthday or your nearest birthday, and premiums change with that age.

  • ±

    Finding an age gap

Enter the older person's date of birth as the date of birth and the younger person's date of birth as the reference date to see the age difference.

  • 🎂

    Counting down to a birthday

The calculator shows how many days are left until your next birthday and the weekday it falls on, which helps when planning a celebration.

This calculator does not measure pregnancy. Doctors and midwives date a pregnancy from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), an ultrasound scan or the IVF transfer date to set the estimated due date (EDD). The legal ages above reflect current rules and can change.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Age Calculator

01

How old am I today?

Your age today is the time between your date of birth and today's date, counted in years, months and days. Enter your date of birth in the Age Calculator, leave the reference date on today and press Calculate Age. The result shows your age in years, months and days, plus your total days and a countdown to your next birthday.

02

How do I check my age from my date of birth?

Check your age from your date of birth by entering your full date of birth in the Age Calculator and pressing Calculate Age. To do it by hand, subtract your date of birth from today's date in order: days, then months, then years. Borrow one month when the days are negative, and borrow 12 months from the years when the months are negative.

03

Is this age calculator accurate?

Yes, this age calculator is accurate to the day. It uses the Gregorian calendar with leap years, month lengths of 28 to 31 days and the 29 February birthday rule. Both dates are processed at midnight UTC, so time zones never shift the result. Only the live seconds counter follows your device clock.

04

What is the difference between calculating age from a birth year and from a date of birth?

Calculating age from a birth year gives two possible numbers, while calculating it from a date of birth gives one exact age. Someone born in 2007 can be 18 years or 19 years old in 2026, depending on whether their birthday has passed. A full date of birth settles that and adds the remaining months and days.

05

How old am I if I was born in 2007?

You are 19 years old in 2026 if you have had your birthday, or 18 years old if your birthday has not arrived yet. Going the other way, someone who is 19 in 2026 was born in 2007 or 2006. Enter your full date of birth for your exact age in years, months and days.

06

Is this age calculator free, and does it work on a phone?

Yes, this age calculator is free, needs no sign-up and works on a phone. It runs in the browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows. Your date of birth is never sent to a server or stored, as set out in this site's Privacy Policy.
